In February 2012, a pit bull mix who we eventually called 'Marla,' showed up at our home (midtown Tulsa). She was bruised and bloated. We brought her to the Tulsa SPCA, but they could not help us. We cared for her, had her vaccinated and spayed. (We can provide all documentation.) We have funded her vaccinations and care on our own, but also have a Veterinarian, Dr. Ann Karnes from the Owasso Animal Shelter, who has donated her skills and expertise. Dr. Karnes estimates that she is about 2-years old, had already given birth to 2-3 litters, and was on the streets for a while before we rescued her. We are looking for a humane option for this dog such as a no-kill dog shelter, a foster home, or a forever home.
Although Walter and I do eventually want a dog, we cannot keep Marla. Our three year-old cat, Pasha, recently suffered a stroke, has had seizures and now is on medication twice a day. She needs monitoring and the costs for her care have been expensive. We are tapped out financially, time and energy wise and cannot give Marla the home she deserves.
Strengths: She is super-friendly with people, responds well to calm-assertive people and basic commands (e.g, sit, stay, back, no), is leash-trained and enjoys walks/jogs, is not food aggressive at all. She is high energy, which compliments an active lifestyle. She is house and crate trained. See the video below her doing a little rough housing and playing with rope.
Areas for growth: She is not cat-friendly and needs work to be socialized with dogs. She tries to dominate dogs (e.g., get on their shoulders) when first encountering them.
We are asking a $75 adoption fee. This fee would would include dog gear (e.g., Illusion collar, harness for vehicle rides, leash) & supplies (e.g., food, treats, water bowl). Previous/experienced dog owners are preferred.
Organizations that we have contacted:
Tulsa SPCA
Tulsa Humane Society
MuttNation in Tishamingo (Miranda Lambert)
Checotah Animal Shelter, Happy Paws (Carrie Underwood)
Cupid's Bridge Animal Shelter
Legacy of Hope Dog Rescue
Mountain Pet Rescue
Craig's List
Cupid's Bridge has been the most helpful organization. Through them she has been going to adoptathons at the Tulsa Hills PetSmart store. Also, Happy Paws has listed her on their website under Pit Princess. She is on the waiting list at the Tulsa Humane Society.
Thanks for taking the time to read Marla's story, please message me here or on facebook if you or someone you know can help. You can also reach my husband Walter, at 918-770-2565.
